Dellner Brakes manufactures technologically advanced stopping, turning and locking (STL) systems and products for the marine industry. Following the company’s acquisition of Gummi USA in September 2017, the company now also supplies a range of high-quality pneumatic drum clutches, brakes, shaft couplings and rotary unions. Precision designed in Sweden, Dellner’s brakes and clutches can be found in marine vessels, such as modern aircraft carriers, cargo ships, ferries, workboats, luxury yachts, and cruise liners.

Dellner’s innovative STL braking systems are precision-engineered to facilitate faster directional changes with maximum manoeuvrability. The unique design also reduces fuel consumption, load on the propulsion systems, and sea growth on the propeller, and enables easy and safe maintenance.

STL braking systems follow the process below:
• Stop: a hydraulic or electric disc brake system stops the shaft quickly in any position
• Turn: after the brake has stopped the disc, a separate mechanism turns the disc and connected shaft into position for locking
• Lock: once in position, the locking mechanism pushes a specially designed tapered pin into a machined slot on the brake disc
This process locks and holds the shaft securely in place, even in ship failure modes. The systems are modular, so customers can choose one, two or all three STL functions to meet their requirements.
The electrically powered continuous turning (cT) function, available with the electrical STL or as an option on the hydraulic STL, allows the shaft and propeller to be turned forwards and backwards for long periods at variable speeds, easing maintenance, checking and testing processes.

Dellner Locking
Dellner Brakes’ innovative stopping, turning, locking (STL) systems comprise one or more disc brakes, turning devices and locking modules. These systems are precision engineered and fully modular, so you can choose from the three functions to create a system that fits your application:

  • Individual stopping, turning or locking functions
  • Dual functions – stopping and turning, stopping and locking, or turning and locking
  • A complete stopping, turning and locking system

Whichever combination you choose, the stopping, turning and locking functions are all operated through a single control panel or from an optional remote hand held control. They can even be operated wirelessly through a smartphone or Ipad.

Our STL systems are available with hydraulic or electric power. They come in three standard sizes and can also be scaled up for large marine vessels or industrial machinery, and adapted to meet your specific needs.

Dellner Turning

STL SYSTEM is a “multi-function” unit all contained in one customer interface. The STL-System offers you one or several of three functions:

Stopping: Dellner Brakes’ hydraulic or electric disc brake calipers effectively handle the stopping operation.

Turning: In two options – step by step indexing and continuous turning.Mechanical linkages with hydraulic cylinders or electric motors positions the disc brakes. Together with an intelligent control system we continuously turn or index the shaft – without the need for other turning devices.

Locking: The Locking Device LM has a specially designed tapered pawl that is engaged into a machined slot on the outer peripheral of the brake disc. This mechanically locks the shaft in place. The LM-device can be operated manually, hydraulically or electrically.

The STL-modular system is indeed a modular system so you can choose the function(s) needed. All from single S, T or L functions, combined dual functions in terms of SL, ST or TL to a complete STL system can be selected.

Dellner Shaft Braking systems
Dellner’s SKD disc brake systems are precision engineered for powerful, reliable and safe braking of rotary motion and longer brake life. They are designed for use on propulsion propeller shafts or wherever service, stopping, holding or tensioning is needed.

These direct acting hydraulic or air pressure applied, spring released units have a braking force of 8 kN (SKD 35) to 516 kN (SKD 4×140), which is directly proportional to the pressure applied.

The two symmetrical brake halves each have two guide pins that transmit the tangential braking force from the brake lining to the housing and mounting support. This removes any radial force on the brake pistons, contributing to longer brake life. Brake pad wear is automatically compensated for with increased piston stroke.

SKD disc brakes are available in a range of standard sizes and can be customised to order, with optional mechanical switches to indicate on/off and brake wear.
